In SpellBee, your goal is to gain as many points as you can in seven rounds of a spelling activity. You can gain points in two different ways. First, when asked to spell a word, you will gain points if you spell it correctly. Second, you will be asked to choose a word for the other player to spell. You will also be able to gain points for this. The number of points will be based on which word you choose, and whether the other player spells that word correctly or not.

Ok, but what will the game look like? How do I play it?

After you successfully enter the SpellBee game (using your SpellBee nickname and password), you will have the chance to find another person to play with. You will see a short list of people (including yourself.) Check the box next to each person that you would be willing to play. In the picture below, I am interested to play with "playerd." If a name is highlighted in yellow, that person is interested to play with you. As soon as you and someone else both show interest in playing each other, your game will start.

Once your match has been found, the game will start. SpellBee games are divided into 7 rounds. In each round, you will choose a spelling challenge for your match, and they will choose a challenge for you. You will be shown a variety of different challenges to choose from (some are easier and some are harder.) To select a challenge, click on it. This part will look like:

The challenge, based on the word you chose, will now be sent to the other player. At the same time, the challenge that they created for you will be sent to you. Once you receive their challenge, your screen will look like the picture below. You will see a sentence with one word missing, and you will hear the full sentence read aloud. Your challenge is to spell the word correctly in the yellow area (where it now says "judge"), and click on "Submit Answer" (or just hit Return.)

A few additional things to notice about the picture above: There is a green number "19" in the top right corner. This is a timer, and will count down to let you know how much time you have remaining. When the timer runs out, your turn is over. Also notice that in the bottom left it says "Round 1 of 10." Each game consists of 10 word-challenge turns, and this lets you know which one you are on. Next to this are the two player scores. Your score is on the top, in red, and the other player's score is on the bottom, in yellow. If you want the spoken sentence repeated, just press the "Replay Audio" button. Finally, notice that in the bottom righthand corner it says "You sent: discovery." This is just a reminder of the word-challenge that you selected for the other player.

After you type your answer and submit it, you will get to see how you did. If you spelled the word correctly, you will get 10 points. If you spell the word wrong, we will show you the correct spelling (but you don't get any points.)

Next, we will tell you how the other player did with the challenge that you chose for them. Remember that you can win points for this part, too! (Based on the numbers above.) Here is what this screen will look like:

So you have now complete the first round. Each game will consist of seven rounds like this. And that's the whole game! Try to gain as many points as you can.
